Private Lessons, Small Group Lessons & Parties

Class Structure for private and group lessons at Coach Street Clay involve a 15-20 min demonstration in the beginning of class. The students will learn about the process of hand- building and/or wheel throwing in a series of 1 or 3 classes depending on their preference.

“Give it a Whirl” Classes are a one day class format in which the students will choose a glaze and the finishing processes will be done for them. Each GIAW class will create 2-3 projects. The pottery will be ready to pick up approximately 2 weeks after the class. Shipping is available for people from out of town.

Parties and GIAW Classes include a free half hour gathering time before class begins to enjoy food and drinks that the participants or party host provides. This is also a time for gifts and cake at kids birthday parties. Parties must be 5 or more people.

Hand-building classes involve combining various surface decorating techniques such as experimenting with textures, stamping, sprigging and surface decoration. Students will learn how to build functional forms such as vases, containers, cups, bowls, plates, platters, etc. Many of our projects are slab built using paper templates. These projects are designed for your success in clay even if its your first day. Students can expect to create multiple one of a kind functional pieces that will be cherished for years to come.

Wheel throwing is a wonderful experience and it is great fun getting your hands dirty.Wheel throwing is a process that takes a lot of time and dedication to really get good at it. For the one day classes we will assist the class participants in centering the clay on the wheel and creating small cups and bowls that will be food safe. The wheel throwing class for beginners is more about the process and the experience than the end product! It is an experience you are sure to remember but please don't expect fine craftsmanship on your first day.

Kids Wheel Throwing & Hand-building Intergenerational

We have found a harmony in teaching kids classes in which there is a big age range. Little kids look up to the big kids and the big kids learn from and enjoy assisting the little kids in small ways. It is a wonderful experience all around. Kids will work with clay and use their imaginations to create pottery and build fun sculptures. They will have an opportunity to work on the potter’s wheel and learn about wheel throwing as well as slab, coil, pinch and solid forming techniques. This special 6 week class invites kids to create and learn with clay. Our small class size allows us to guide kids efficiently through their own process in clay. Clay, glazes and firings, are included with the registration fee. All work must be finished by the last day of class.Ages 6-15.
